Ebola arrives Mali as 2-year-old child becomes first victim

The first case of the Ebola virus disease has been recorded in Mali, and the first victim in the country is a 2-year-old girl.
After being recorded in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Nigeria, and Senegal, its presence in Mali makes it the sixth West African country to be affected by the worst outbreak on record of the deadly disease.

Mali’s Health Minister, Ousmane Kone revealed to the state television that the 2-year-old girl had recently arrived from neighbouring Guinea, where the outbreak began.
He said that the child’s blood sample tested positive for the virus at a hospital in the Malian town of Kayes on Wednesday.
The minister said, “The condition of the girl, according to our services, is improving thanks to her rapid treatment. The sick child and the people who were in contact with her in Kayes were immediately identified and taken care of.”
The girl’s mother is believed to have died in Guinea a few weeks ago and the child was brought by relatives to Bamako, where she stayed for 10 days in the Bagadadji neighbourhood before being taken to Kayes.
